Now, please don't get me wrong, I love Lara and her movement. I was just overwhelmed by this CONSTANT chatter in my industry and it was too much. However, part of me was absolutely curious as to what all of the buzz was about! One of my biggest frustrations with where I am at this point in my career is continuing education. I've been to many workshops and I have learned and built an incredibly strong business. I have my dream studio, an amazing crew, I am booking my perfect clients and pushing our limits to be the best possible photographers and people we can be. I mean....shit.....I. MAKE. THINGS. HAPPEN.
So, did I need this motivational speech? I mean, I've got it all figured out, right?
Wrong. I learned a lot about myself yesterday and I am incredibly happy that I decided to go. The big thing that I think anyone who will attend this workshop in the future should know is that it is what YOU make of it. The session really has absolutely nothing to do with Lara and Jeff, but everything to do with yourself. They are simply creating a safe environment for you to explore yourself, which is the foundation of owning a great and successful business - and also allowing you to dream big....like REAL big. (I confessed I was going to be on Oprah someday and be the next Richard Avedon....)
I also want to encourage all of you 'veteran' photographers, coordinators, vendors or people who DO have it all 'together' to attend the Making Things Happen tour. I had to dig down really deep to find things that I needed to change or face some fears that I was holding back from and when you are established, there are expectations that you are suppose to reach. I fully intend to reach those lofty goals, but they are scary and personally, I had been putting off many of those BIG things, because I might fail. Well, fuck it if I do, but I am also the type of person that if I go for it, I will absolutely succeed, so what's the point in putting it off? There is always, always room for growth. Challenge yourself and live your dreams.
I am also very proud of the Minneapolis industry right now! I live in such a great community of artists who really do offer a great support system for growth!
Midwest is the best, yo.
A big thanks to Lara and Jeff for bringing their workshop to Minneapolis! These two really opened up and gave ALL of themselves, emotionally, to the attendees, so thank you! I am a big believer in the Midwest photographers, so it's nice to get the support from others in our industry!

Thank you for tweeting about your post. I love your raw and honest approach to talking about what you got out of the Making Things Happen. I find your view to be ridiculously refreshing and thank you for sharing.
(01.21.10 @ 02:05 PM)How much would I have to pay you to have you follow me around and take pictures of me that make me look that bad-ass? It was so great finally meeting you yesterday.
(01.21.10 @ 02:35 PM)Thanks so much for sharing your experience - and your initial reservations. I'm attending MTH in Atlanta next month and I've been feeling exactly the same way. I'm no seasoned pro, I'm on the ground floor of my business so I'm in prime motivational time already. I've been worrying about it and thinking "Am I going to be the ONE person who leaves this workshop feeling worse than when I went in?" I've been assured I won't but still...it's good to hear. :)
(01.21.10 @ 04:28 PM)Thank you so much for your honest feedback about the intensive! I'll be attending in NYC and though I have reservations (feel a little out of my league) this post helped to put things a bit more in persepctive. I hope to learn a great deal at MTH!
(01.21.10 @ 04:44 PM)Wonderful post - I love your honesty. It's sometimes hard for those of us overseas watching from a distance to get some reality out the industry over there, but posts like these are a big help, and this is a great message.
(01.24.10 @ 04:56 AM)Amen! It is inspiring to dig deep in to personal goals. Can't wait to hear about all the other, crazy amazing things you've been you to. Watch out Oprah :)
(01.28.10 @ 03:28 PM)A couple weeks ago, we photographed the McCullough's amazing wedding and here are just a handful of the awesome adventures we had:
1) Melissa surprised us with New Moon candy...I've never read any of the Twilight series, but she is a big fan! Regardless, the sugar was quite nice!
2) It was 9 degrees that day, which meant two things...One, I was wearing Under Armour beneath my clothes and two, we killed the brides flowers by being outside for 20 minutes! (Side note...we absolutely LOVE our clients, because they sacrifice a lot to create amazing images...:0)
3) We forgot our stand, so Brandon was the "Human Light Stand"
4) My crew shows tons of passion during the day...and a little bit of camaraderie as well! This collaboration between artists takes our creativity up 10 notches and I looooove it!
5) Since it's so cold here, I decided to have a glamour-shots moment with a heater...I was nice and toasty!
The point of this post is to show you all that crazy things will always happen on a wedding day and encourage photographers not to get stressed while shooting. Remember to have confidence in your craft...the best photographers can make magic out of the most blah of situations, rock it out and create some amazing images!
Here's to shooting in the Midwest and to my kick-ass-crew!

If there was ever solid proof of the dork that I am, that first picture pretty much NAILS it. Love it. That was an EXCELLENT wedding; definitely one of my favorites.
(01.20.10 @ 03:23 PM)LOVE that shot of Brandon caressing the Norman... these are great E!
(01.27.10 @ 02:33 PM)I can't believe I missed this post until now! I love it and I love how much fun you guys have while still doing your jobs. Eliesa- you say your clients sacrifice a lot for good pictures but so do you and your staff. You froze for us and stayed late just to help us get amazing pictures to remember our wedding. You are amazing- thank you all so much!! And, Melissa, you can't go wrong with Twilight, the books are pretty great
(02.14.10 @ 11:12 PM)People think I'm disciplined. It is not discipline. It is devotion. There is a great difference.

I am SUPER excited to share with you all the launch of my first book!!
It's been on my goal list for a while now to create a coffee table book and it really started out as a personal project for myself. I am a huge believer in creating something with your images. When we live in an age of computers and iphones, every image seems to stay on a machine. I love prints, canvas, albums and - alas - books! As I started talking about this project, I started noticing an interesting response...people actually wanted to see it!
The [Film] Book features images from my film cameras over the last year. You all know how passionate I am about film, so this is very special to me! I also wanted to share my thoughts in the book so I chose to do so through quotes. I'm a big quote-girl, if you couldn't tell, and I thought there was no better way to inspire than to use references that you can take with you on a daily basis!
So, without further adieu...
I present to you...
