Wedding Photography

Mr. and Mrs. Christman!

This past weekend's wedding had a lot of meaning to me, personally, and put me in a place that I have never ever been in before...the Maid of Honor! Yes, that's right, I was juggling double-duties...shooting, wearing the dress, giving the speech, yadda yadda - and, if I must say so myself, I did a pretty damn good job (with the help of my amazing crew of course!) However, this blog post is not about me at all, it is all about my childhood-best-friend, Amber and her awesome husband, Joe!

When Amber and Joe started planning their wedding, they wanted to somehow merge their love for triathlons, cycling...and Lance Armstrong. Seriously, they might borderline on winning Lance's 'Biggest Fans Ever' award. When you walk into their home, there are posters of him, books, inspirational quotes, jerseys, you-name-it-they-have-it. So, it was more than fitting when they settled on a theme for their wedding day - LIVESTRONG.

Now, something happened on their wedding day, that I thought was just so cool. Amber was at her parent's house and Joe and I got up early for the festivities and, of course, Joe knew that it was the first day of the 2011 Tour de France. As we clicked on the good old T.V., the first words that flashed across the screen were 'The Journey Begins' and the announcers began to talk about how there has to truly be a perfect marriage between all the cyclists on a team to win the Tour. They went on and on...and all I could think about was how incredibly fitting those words were on the morning of Amber and Joe's wedding!

At the end of the day, a great man married my best friend and there is not a detail, dress or frilly cake detail that could top that! Joe and Amber - I am truly happy for the both of you - Congratulations and thank you so much for letting me be a part of it!

Mr. and Mrs. Resch!

Allison and Jason's wedding gave me goosebumps! The way that these two simply look at each other makes you fall in love with them and their energy is contagious! Allison is a clothing designer for Target, so when it came to planning her wedding, she had inspiration boards galore with visions of her perfect day. It was AMAZING to see all of her ideas take shape and become a reality - and I can honestly say that absolutely everything was perfect! The day started out at the Hotel Ivy and we made or way to the Basilica for the ceremony! Their reception took place at the Calhoun Beach Club and I can't even begin to tell you how gorgeous the decor was in there! Major props to Just Bloomed for putting together the amazing bouquets and to Allison's step mother for creating all the gorgeous floral arrangements for their reception - simply stunning! I should also thank Kirsten from Fab.You.Lous Events for making sure their day ran super smoothly - this girl did one fabulous job! I can't show too many images from their wedding yet, and for good reason (hint, hint), but here are some of my favorite frames from Allison and Jason's wedding!

A BIG congratulations to Allison and Jason on getting hitched!! You both ROCK!

Meet the Team // Louisa: Rivets & Roses Photographer

This week's crew member for our 'Meet the Team' feature is our one and only, Louisa Podlich! Louisa is our lead photographer for our sister company, Rivets and Roses! She has been an incredible addition to our team and I am beyond impressed with this girl's talent, work ethic and true passion for creating amazing imagery! Louisa is an artist whose work grows exponentially and she truly cares so much about her clients and her craft!

To check out more work from Louisa, follow her on Twitter & Facebook!

Q. What is your role in the Photogen Inc. Crew & Rivets and Roses?

I started working with the Photogen Inc crew last summer as the new lead photographer for Rivets and Roses. This means that I get to work with all the amazing Photogen Inc. people when I shoot weddings and when I help Eliesa out on her big, awesome test shoots. I am in charge of finding my clients, meeting with them and booking them, as well as shooting the weddings and engagement sessions. It's the perfect blend of independence and team support.

Q. How did you begin working for Rivets and Roses?

I met Eliesa several years ago through mutual friends of ours. We've run into each other here and there for the past 3-4 years and last summer, I decided to go to one of her MINNeSHOP workshops. I was so inspired by the incredible artists that I met that I think I sent a rather flowery thank you note to the Photogen Inc. studio. A few weeks later, Eliesa called me up and we met for a cup of coffee. She explained how Rivets and Roses worked; it's basically an umbrella company for new photographers who want to get into the wedding industry, but don't have the start-up funds. Eliesa supports her photographers by providing a website, equipment, assistants, etc. and the photographers who work under the umbrella can build a client base while still being supported by a more experienced and seasoned professional studio. I jumped at the chance to get in the field and have Eliesa as a mentor.

Q. What does it mean to be a lead photographer and growing into that roll from an assistant?

I haven't done much assisting yet, although it's a great experience. I like watching my peers work and I appreciate opportunities to assist, because it gives me a fresh look at how to go about the day. There is also something very liberating about shooting for 8 hours and then just handing the files over and not having to think about them anymore! I prefer being a lead photographer, though, because my favorite part of the wedding day is spending time with the couple. Being a lead photographer means there is a lot of work and planning that you have to do before the wedding day and a TON of editing and follow-up after the wedding day, so it's a serious amount of time and energy. Ultimately, I have to rely on myself to make sure my clients are happy and relaxed, that they are getting what they want and that my shots are going to exceed their expectations. More responsibility than assisting, but WAY more rewarding.

Q. How has being a part of this crew helped you as an artist?

I think that my technical skills have gotten exponentially better. After shooting my first wedding, I sat down with Eliesa and she helped me work though how I could make better exposures, better composition, better everything. Having a good eye for emotion and feeling only goes so far, if you don't know how your camera works. Beyond the technical, being around Eliesa, Liz, Jess and the other photographers I've met has made me think about how I see the world and why people should care about my point of view. It's made me think about how to best use color, contrast, shape, etc. If I had not taken the job at Rivets and Roses, I think I would still be back at square one.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting?

My favorite part about shooting is when I get a frame that make me want to do a little dance. Sometimes everything comes together just so  and the image is perfect. It's a blend of expression, light color and composition, as well as that instant where I am totally in synch with my clients.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

I love thunderstorms, my kittens, sitting on my front porch, growing things, crocheting, the amazing people in my life, noticing tiny and beautiful things when I go for walks, getting foot rubs, being near the water, boats, glass bottles, the ocean, steak (medium rare), candy, jeans that fit just right, jewelry, talent, old houses, driftwood, Bon Iver...want me to keep going?

Q. How did you start being a photographer?

I was dating a videographer several years ago and he convinced me to buy a DLSR. Once I started snapping away, I couldn't stop. My first year produced some pretty terrible images, but luckily that didn't slow me down (plus, at the time, I think I thought they were pretty good.) I have a lot of background in the sales field and I've been able to use that training to be shameless when it comes to self-promotion. My friends probably think I'm a broken record, because I talk about shooting all the time, but it's paid off! If you don't ask people to hire you, no one will.

Q. What do you think you bring to this team?

I bring a good attitude to the team, along with a solid work ethic. I feel lucky to work with Eliesa and her crew, and through listening to her critique and advice, I believe I've become a better photographer. Also, I am reliable and punctual; two things that are essential to being a professional in this field.

Q. What are you looking forward to the most for the 2011 season and beyond?

Once I get more comfortable with all the changing light situations that you get in a wedding, I will improve tenfold. I'm looking forward to the technical aspect of photography to come as easily for me as the client communication. I am excited to meet more new people and make friends in the industry and I hope I can make it to Eliesa's next Elevate Workshop!!!

Mr. and Mrs. O'Neill!

I've known Christian and Jim for a long time now and they are one of the coolest couples I have ever met! Jim is an incredible musician with a bit of a jazzy flare to him and Christian is a super-driven woman who just radiates beauty! She was the bride of all brides on her wedding day. Absolutely every detail of her was classic and traditional in a lovely way that was the absolute perfect look for her. Together as a couple, Jim and Christian are timeless. I've seen their relationship grow over the past few years and I was so happy that I could be a part of their event! My favorite part about this wedding was clearly, how many amazing people they have in their lives. Every single one of their 'vendors', if you will, are close and personal friends of theirs and it made for one amazing set of collaboration! Zook Floral Design created all the gorgeous floral arrangements and the local group Jelloslavedid an amazing job with the music! Of course, Jim himself put on a little performance for everyone that was just so much fun!

To Jim and Christian, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to capture this time in your lives! You two are absolutely amazing!LOVEe

Meet the Team // Tom : Second Shooter!

I'm currently at Engage11, which is absolutely amazing and I'll be blogging all about that in the days to come; however, one constant trend that has hit super close to home at this conference is the value of your team. Whether that is simply your significant other, your family or an actual staff, the people that surround you and represent your business MUST be the best of the best! With that said, not only should they work hard and be the best they can be for you, but as leaders, we need to rock it out and give that quality of leadership to all of our 'people'! Last week, we kicked off the "Meet the Team" series with our studio manager, Liz, and this week we are featuring one of our amazing second shooters, Tom!Tom has been with our crew for a couple of seasons now and we are so fortunate to have him! When I first met Tom, he was like a loose cannon in a reception venue - he. was. everywhere!!! He is a photographer who is refining his shooting process, but what I love about him is his extreme passion. If he has an idea, he will go for it, no matter what (unless I say we have to move on), but it is that kind of passion that keeps the energy up when we are shooting for 13 hours - and it is that kind of passion that can really create some amazing images! Tom will go to any lengths to connect with a couple, which is absolutely amazing as well. He's also a sensitive dude that, you know, can relate to dudes on a dude level when emotions get high on their wedding day! We need someone exactly like that on our team! Tom is one. cool. dude.

Q. How long have you worked for Photogen Inc?

I started working for Photogen in August of 2009. I had recently discovered my passion for wedding photography and I was constantly searching for photographers whose style I loved. That's when I found Photogen and I sent an e-mail asking to be a fly on the wall. Little did I know they would love my style and brought me a to be a second photographer! What is your favorite part about being a part of this crew? I love how passionate everyone is about creating the most beautiful images they can. It's our passion, I know that I am always inspired by everyone's drive and creativity. It pushes me to come up with new ways to show the love and celebration present in each client's marriage and wedding day.

Q.What do you bring to the team?

As a perennial rookie/underdog I like to think that I bring a constant excitement to learn and try new things. I'm always trying to think outside of the box with ways to move Photogen forward. Whether this comes through experimental photographs or other crazy ideas. I try to keep everyone's creative juices flowing. Oh yeah, and I'm really hilarious.

Q.How has working for Photogen Inc. shaped you as a photographer?

Um, Photogen Inc. has been my proverbial mother. I've learned so much, it's shaped me more than I can realize. Eliesa is constantly pushing boundaries, coming up with new ideas, so in that way I really take after her. I am grateful for the time I've spent working for this company. I have learned how to always be ready, and anticipate what will happen next. It has also taught me that I love to scout for photographs and develop the concepts for portraits beforehand.

Q. What is your favorite part about shooting a wedding?

I know this might be an oddball thing to say to most photographers, but I'm going to go with the ceremony. I believe that the marriage of two people is the clearest picture we have of God's love this side of heaven. Ceremonies are deeply moving and beautiful to me, every opportunity I have to capture that is a huge blessing.

Q. What else do you love in life, besides photography?

First and foremost is my love and gratitude for God's mercy and redemption. I don't know where I would be without that. A close second is my wonderful girlfriend Valerie, my family, awesome music, and coffee. If you ever want to get to know me, take me to a world-class coffee shop, like Dogwood Coffee at Calhoun Square. I will drop everything to get a cup of coffee and some great conversation with someone. It's my love language, seriously.

Q. What are you most excited about for the 2011 season?

I'm most excited to be a part of couples wedding days. I am so blessed to witness the love of our clients every weekend. I'm excited to make new friends. I'm excited to grow as a photographer, and friend with the rest of this crew. I love this job.

Mr. and Mrs. Ward!

Alex and Nick are so much fun. All of their friends are so much fun. And their families - they're a hoot. I remember a few months ago, Nick made the comment, "When all is said and done, I just want to be married and have a big party!"- and that is exactly what happened! We've had quite the weather here in Minnesota the past couple of weeks and the day started off dark, gloomy and pouring rain; however, as soon as we were all traveling to the church for the big event, the sunshine came out and it ended up being an absolutely perfect day for photos! The couple chose the oh-so-gorgeous chapel at the Lakewood Cemeteryto have their ceremony and the day was even complete with a custom theater sign in Uptown - who doesn't love a little shout out to the city on their wedding day?!?!

Congratulations to Alex and Nick! We had a blast!

Meet the Team // Liz: Studio Manager

For the next month or so, I am going to be doing a little blog post on each member of our Photogen Inc. Crew! I have THE most amazing people on my team and I want you all to get a chance to know them more! The thing about running a business is that you can only handle everything yourself for so long, before you need to bring on help. I am a HUGE believer in surrounding myself with the best of the best and creating amazing work for our clients!! My team is absolutely everything to me and they work SO hard and making this dream come true!First up is Liz! As many of you know, Liz is my studio manager...aka...the other side of my brain and my right hand woman! Q. How did you begin working for Photogen Inc.?

I began working for Photogen Inc through my friend. I met Eliesa very randomly - at an installation at the Soap Factory with Brandon. It's like a weird love story, she must have liked my personality for some reason (Brandon and I inspected most of the photographers there from inches away, like we were taught.) We laughed and chatted - and I blurted out, asking if she needed an intern. That day, my future job was born. I interned for 3 months, did a test edit, and got hired on a few months after my internship was up.

Q. What does it mean to be a Studio Manager?

At Photogen Inc, a studio manager is many, many things. A studio manager not only 'manages' the studio, but also is a personal assistant (ie: doing makeup and hair for Eliesa), a connoisseur of running errands, has the ability to read minds and be 10 steps ahead at all times, edits every wedding, portrait, engagement, and boudoir session - as well as performing magic on commercial work. I am a studio manager extraordinaire.

Q. How has your job changed/help you grow as a photographer?

My job has given me a lot of opportunity as a photographer. Eliesa knows every single person that you really need to know in this industry, which has helped me get my personal photography out there and get amazing feedback from other amazing photographers.

Q. Has your view of the photography industry changed after working for Photogen Inc vs being a student?

I knew this industry was a hard one to survive in - Photogen Inc has shown me the ups and downs that a business goes though. As a student, I of course had zero experience in the photo world. I can't say that now I'm a seasoned veteran, but working for Photogen Inc for the past few years has taught me to be ready for anything and everything.

Q. What is it like being editing and setting up work for both weddings and the commercial world?

It gets stressful. In my position, I get to be editor, assistant, digital tech, and mind reader. Weddings are easiest for me. The commercial world gets a lot more complicated.

Q. What do you love most about working for Photogen Inc?

I love the flexibility and being in a creative environment.

Q. What do you hope to do for the company and our clients in the future?

I hope to keep things organized and flowing smoothly, like I do now. I hope to make the clients happy, even though they probably will never meet me.

Mr. and Mrs. Klaas

Back when the bride's parent's got married, Kelsey's mother had a true DIY (do-it-yourself) wedding, right down to making her own wedding dress. Fast forward to 2011 and Kelsey would have it no other way. There are DIY weddings...and then there are DIY weddings! For Kelsey and James's big day, family and friends came together months ago to begin making all of the details. The mother-of-the-bride made each bridesmaid their own custom dress, the girls came together to make their super-fun-hair-pieces and the bride even made all of her attendants custom jewelry! Beyond all of this, they also made all of their own flower arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres - that turned out gorgeous!! One of the coolest details of the day was a handkerchief from the women on the groom's side. This particular handkerchief has been carried by every woman being married in the family since the 1800's - and every bride signs and dates the envelope after the big event. There's something so cool about a tradition like this - and being able to feel like you are taking part in this very special experience that so many other generations have done!

The festivities took place with the ceremony at the Lake of the Isles Chapel and continued onto the Nicollet Island Pavilion and even though it was rainy - it was a very happy day!

Congratulations to Kelsey and James!! You two are a couple who is absolutely perfect for each other and it is so clear that you are going to have a long and happy life together!

Mr. and Mrs. Asztalo // An Arizona Wedding!

This past weekend officially kicked off the 2011 wedding season for the Photogen Inc. Crew and we were SUPER pumped to start things off in Arizona with Lori and David! You might remember these two from last summer when they were announced as the winners of our 2011 Wedding Giveaway! The purpose of the giveaway each year is to give back to one super-deserving couple and David and Lori are genuinely the real deal - they are also a couple who is completely meant to be together.

Lori and David have known each other since they were little kids, yet they only met two years ago. Both of these two are from Romania and their families immigrated to the United States when they were very young. They use to play together as little children, but were separated when their churches split. Both Lori and David went on with their lives and as chance would have it, they both decided to go to the University of Arizona for college. Lori's friends would always talk about a Romanian boy they were friends with, but they never had a chance to meet. Lori eventually went off to Chicago for work, but came back to Arizona for medical school. Two years ago, while filling the role as a bridesmaid in her friend's wedding, Lori walk magically paired up to walk down the isle with David! This mysterious Romanian boy she has been wondering all of her life was right there by her side and that is where he has been ever since! These two truly feel that the powers-that-be have brought them together and they have each found their soul mate!

Congratulations to Lori and David on your marriage! We had SUCH an amazing day with you and were happy we could be a part of your big day!

Mr. and Mrs. Weiss // Married in the Windy City!

Words can not describe how much I have come to love Heidi, Jonah and their families! This past weekend, I traveled to Chicago to photograph their wedding and it was absolutely spectacular! First off, one of my best friends in the world, Jeffrey of JNP Studios, came out with me to second shoot! I absolutely LOVE shooting with him - the creative energy is simply off the hook! One of the reasons I am so drawn to traveling for weddings is because I get to know the couple, their family and their friends SO much more! I usually fly in on Friday and leave on a Sunday, which allows me to go to rehearsal dinners, after parties  - you name it! I love the more intimate time with the couple's family and friends before the big day, because it really helps me connect with them so much more! I also love that by the time that we leave, we feel like family! One of my favorite things about this couple is the fact that they literally love to throw a great party! That was their only objective, besides getting married, and both Heidi and Jonah really allowed themselves to let loose and have fun! To bring this party all together, the oh-so-wonderful Claudia & Mira from As You Wish - An Event Planning Company, came on board! They were SUCH a joy to work with! Heidi and Jonah had their event at the Ravenswood Billboard Factory, which was an incredible fun space! Imagine an old warehouse feel, mixed with a vintage car museum and gorgeous window light? Yes, please!

Heidi and Jonah's wedding, was, in fact, one giant celebration! I could tell that they truly value their friends and family more than anything else in their lives and from the word's of the groom, "Let's Fuckin' Party!"

Mr. and Mrs. Von Ruden!!

Every client is different for me and I really try and wrap my head around each of their days! Not only do the couple's choice of venue, style, and personality come into play, but also the time of year and - most importantly - the overall vibe I get from them! Sarah and Anthony have always stuck me as one of those couples who are truly classic and timeless. Since they booked, I kept thinking about The Kennedy's wedding and how I could use that as a source of inspiration! Sarah and Rudy's wedding took place at The Landmark Center, which is an incredibly historical spot in St Paul. Mix that with Sarah's gorgeous lace dress and their never-ending beauty and they were simply stunning on their wedding day! As I was processing these images, I just fell in love with every image a little bit more when it was in black and white! They have an energy and mood to them when processed this way vs color, SO...this entire blog post is in B&W...bold, I know!;0) Sarah and Rudy's also marked the LAST wedding of our 2010 season and it was quite the finale - and the perfect end to one amazing year of weddings!

I hope you love these as much as I do!

Mr. and Mrs. Lund!!

Kristi and Ande had a SMASHIN' wedding day! That's right... a smashin', bangin' hootin' and hollerin' wedding day!! I suppose what I'm trying to say is that their entire day was simply SO much freakin' fun for absolutely everyone involved! I have personally been looking forward to this couple's wedding day for quite some time and it was just as fabulous as I had imagined!Their event took place at The Mill City Museum and I had the opportunity to work with one of my favorite florists in town, Skinner Jones! One of the things that I LOVED about their  wedding were the bridesmaid dresses! I know - usually they are hit and miss, but these dresses were a BIG hit! It was a one-size-fits-all-no-alterations-and-you-can-wear-them-a-million-different-ways-dress! Absolutely each and every one of Kristi's ladies looked FANTASTIC in these dresses! The other major high light for me was the music! Ande and Kristi actually met each other for the first time when they had roles in their highschool musical! Their love for music carried on over the years and they had THE best live band - The Soul Tight Committee at their reception! Seriously...they were jaw dropping good!

A HUUUGE congratulations goes out to Kristi and Ande on their amazingly-over-the-top-fun wedding! You are a couple that I admire very, very much! Thank you SO much for letting me be a part of your big day!

Mr. and Mrs. Oeltjenbruns!!

I know I always talk about how much I love my clients, and trust me, I really, REALLY love each and every one of them! But I have to say, Matt and Hillary are two of my all-time-favorite people! There are literally, a million reason why I love these two so much, but one of the things that has always stuck in my head about this couple is really how much they truly value their photos! I grew up in the same hometown as both Hillary and Matt, but never really knew them too well. The amazing thing about them is that after they became engaged, I was THE FIRST PERSON they called!!! How INSANE is that! For me, that really brought home how powerful my images speak to those around me and the true worth that they hold to my clients! The best bookings are those clients who don't even think twice, they just HAVE to have Team Photogen Inc and all that we offer! Over the last year, Matt, Hillary and I have built this amazing friendship and I really admire how grateful this couple is for absolutely everyone in their lives! One thing I love about this couple is their families. Both sets of their parents are still married and ALL of their grandparents are still married!! Marriage is another value that has been instilled, and nurtured through generations in this family and it is SO obvious, when you see the way that Matt and Hill love each other!

Hillary also takes the award for best bouquet this year!

Shana and Jacob are a striking couple! I remember, after photographing their engagement photos, I had no other words to describe them other than gorgeous! Not only do they look amazing together, but they are a very complimentary couple as well! Shana and Jacob are one of those couples who just LOOKlike they are suppose to be together...hence why they are! They are a couple who adore, love and have the utmost respect for each other and after meeting their families, it's obvious that those values have been handed down through the generations...along with their good genes! :0)Shana and Jacob had the perfect Minneapolis wedding! It was beyond gorgeous outside on their wedding day and the fall colors are in their peak!! We had SUCH a blast with this couple - they know how to glam it up and have a TON of fun!
